GENERAL PRESCRIPTIONS FOR INDICATION SIGNS


1. Intrinsic features

The shape and colors of the signs to be used are defined by point 3, according to their specific purpose (prohibition, warning, obligation, rescue signs and fire equipment signs).
Measurements, colorimetrical and photometric features of the signs must guarantee good visibility and intelligibility.
As for measures, t is recommended to follow the following formula: A > L2/2000, where A represents the surface of the sign expressed in m2 and L is the distance measured in meters, where the sign must be still recognized. The formula is applicable up to a distance of about 50 meters.
As for the chromatic and photometric features of materials, please check UNI regulations.

2. Conditions of use

2.1. Signs are installed by considering possible obstacles at an appropriate height and position for the viewing angle, at the entrance of the concerned area in case of general risk, or in the immediate proximity of a specific risk or of the object that one intends to indicate and in a well-lighted area, easily accessible and visible.
As per the instructions of the Decree 626/1994, in case of bad natural lighting, it will be necessary to use fluorescent colors, reflective materials or artificial lighting.

2.2. The sign has to be removed as soon as the situation justifying its presence no longer subsists.

3. Signs to be used

3.1. PROHIBITION SIGNS - Intrinsic features: round shape; black pictogram on a white background; border and band (towards the bottom from left to right along the icon, with an inclination of 45°) red (the red color must cover at least 35% of the surface of the sign).

3.2. WARNING SIGNS - Intrinsic features: triangular shape; black pictogram on a yellow background, black border (the yellow colour must cover at least 50% of the surface of the sign).

3.3. OBLIGATION SIGNS - Intrinsic features: round shape; white pictogram on a blue background (the blue color must cover at least 50% of the surface of the sign).

3.4. RESCUE SIGNS - Intrinsic features: square or rectangular shape; white pictogram on green background (the greencolour must cover at least 50% of the surface of the sign).

3.5. SIGNS FOR FIRE EQUIPMENT - Intrinsic features: square or rectangular shape; white pictogram on red background (the red colour must cover at least 50% of the surface of the sign).



PRESCRIPTIONS FOR SIGNS CONCERNING CONTAINERS AND PIPING


Containers used in thh work environment and containing dangerous substances or mix, as per the law of 29th May 1974, no. 256, and the decree of 28th January 1992 and subsequent amendments and addendum, containers used for storing such dangerous substances and mixes, visible pipes needed to contain or transport such dangerous substances or mixes, must be equipped with a label (pictogram or icon on the background color) as per the regulations mentioned.

The first paragraph is not applied to the containers used in work environments for a short while the containers which contents is frequently changed, as long as suitable measures are taken, particularly briefing and training sessions that guarantee an identical protection level.

The labels foreseen by the first paragraph can be:
- replaced by warning signs reporting the same pictogram or icon;
- completed by further information, such as the name or the formula of the dangerous mix or substance and the details of the related risks;
- completed or replaced, as for the transportation of the containers in the work environment, by signs used in the EU for the transportation of dangerous goods or mixes.

The above signs must be applied like so:
- on the visible side or sides;
- in rigid form, adhesive or varnished.

The labels used on the pipes must be applied in a visible manner close to the points of major danger, such as valves joining points and must appear several times.
Areas, rooms or wings used for the deposit of dangerous substances or mixes in big quantities must be indicated by an appropriate warning sign.

The deposit of a certain amount of dangerous substances or mixes can be indicated by a warning sign "generic danger".

The above signs or labels must be applied, according to the case, by the stocking area or on the access door of the store room.



PRESCRIPTIONS FOR THE SIGNS USED TO IDENTIFY AND INDICATE THE LOCATION OF FIRE EQUIPMENT


It is applied to the equipment used solely to fight fire.
Fire equipment must be identified by means of special colors and a sign indicating their location or by means of coloring the positions where they are located or of accesses to such positions.
The identification color of such equipment is red.
The red surface must have enough width to allow easy identification.
Signs must be used to identify the location of such equipment.



PRESCRIPTIONS FOR THE INDICATION OF OBSTACLES AND DANGEROUS POINTS AND FOR THE INDICATION OF CIRCULATION WAYS


The indication of obstacles and dangerous points.
In order to mark the risk of collision with obstacles, the fall of objects and the fall of people within the perimeter of of the buildings of the company where workers have access during working hours, yellow is used alternated to black as well as red alternated to white.
The measurements of the signs will be proportional to the measurements of the obstacle or the dangerous point that one intends to indicate.
Yellow and black bars or red and white bars must have an inclination of about 45° and measurements more and less equal.

Indication of the circulation ways.
Should the use and the equipment of the rooms make it necessary for the protection of workers, circulation ways for vehicles must be clearly indicated with continuous stripes of clearly-visible color, possibly white or yellow, depending on the color of the floor.
The location of stripes will have to consider safety distances necessary between vehicles that can circulate and everything that can be found nearby, as well as between pedestrians and vehicles.
Permanent ways situated outside the building must be indicated in the same way, in the way that is deemed necessary, unless they are provided with barriers or appropriate flooring.
